SAGE
& UFO
SAGE
Sage has an
extensive musical history. Her study began at age 4, playing the
violin in the orchestra and singing in the choir. Her musical travels
continued with learnning Irish Traditional, and studying, Jazz,
Blues, Popular, Electronic, Latin and World music in college with
her main instruments of study being Drums and Violin, outside of
school her interests were a lot different, playing drums and singing
in many punk/indie rock bands in Northern Ireland where she was
brought up.
Her interest in drum and bass grew stronger, she attended the few
drum and bass nights in San Francisco..."Engerie" with
the BASS Crew and "Phunckateck" at the Top. Her exposure
to good drum and bass DJs was watching Noel, UFO! and Abstract play
at thes clubs, warehouse parties and Raves. In 1997 DJs Noel and
UFO! became her roommates, she now had turntables and a mixer to
mix all her records on. "I never really wanted to be a DJ....I
always saw myself as a producer or musician. The turntables were
at the house and I knew it would be much more fun taking an active
part in playing records, so I began mixing. A month later I got
my first gig at "Phunckateck", the next month I pulled
a residency at Funky Techno Tribes "Ultra", the month
after that I became an official "Phunckateck" member.
This is where my new found career as a DJ began to grow."
Over the past year and a half, Sage has had different residencies
in San Francisco, "Ultra", "Phunckateck", "Eklektic"
and she has, and continues to DJ all over the USA. The end of this
year takes her internationally to DJ and produce Europe as well
as already playing in her homeland Ireland. Her home built studio
is where she intends to evolve her production skills, with two releases
out and more on the way. (Evil Twins rmx, Cosmic Flux...03/99, Downcast,
Green Label...04/99) Sage is co-founder of "Green Promotions"
alongside business partner Cathy Ellis of "Green Label",
a promotions company where their intentions are to bring the awareness
of good US drum and bass, as well as promoting excellent British
drum and bass labels, TOV, Renegade Hardware, Renegade recordings,
Audio Blueprint and Underfire.
As well as writing Drum and Bass reviews for BPM magazine, she helps
run weekly San Francisco club Eklektic, Phunckatecks monthly and
many up and coming one off drum and bass events linked up with San
Francisco's "Thump Radio". Her goal is to represent females
as a skilled DJ. She would prefer to be booked for skills and not
her born gender. "I feel the more women DJs there are, promoters
can be more selective and book for skills, rather than booking them
for being a girl. I feel that some women are intimidated by the
music industry because it is male dominated, or they just don't
want to deal with the "girl DJ" stereotype...we need to
change that."
UFO!
UFO! tears up the turntables with his own incomparable style. Prolific
in the studio, he is one of the most innovative producers in the
U.S. A Bay Area native, UFO! pioneered the San Francisco Drum and
Bass scene and co-founded the much respected Phunckateck collective
and forged a new community in music. "We're like a family",
is how he describes the San Francisco Drum & Bass scene, "We
have mutual respect and we can create with no boundaries."
His DJ skills
are unrivaled as he puts a new spin on Drum & Bass tunes and
slams out his own extensive track list. His dexterity on the decks
is world-renowned. Having been a battle DJ, he attacks the turntables
as a practiced warrior. Recently nominated for "Best Drum &
Bass DJ" by SF-Niteâ€s Awards 2000, UFO! has
played three different residencies in S.F., Ultra, Phunckateck,
and Eklektic. This year, UFO! was invited for yet another residency
in Atlanta, Georgia and the entire Phunckateck collective were invited
for a residency in Raleigh, North Carolina.
UFO! recently
completed a successful European tour with fellow Phunckateck icon
Sage and German producer Panacea. UFO!, along with his co-conspirator
Sage, have been invited to return to Europe and will play in Germany,
Switzerland, France, Austria, and Ireland with more international
bookings in the works. His DJing capabilities are only outshined
by his incredible talent for recognizing dance floor smashes and
his own genius for producing tracks.
Featured in
magazines such as URB, XLR8R, Lotus, Mixmag, Knowledge, and many
other 'zines, UFO! is one of the most sought after producers in
the U.S. Record labels across the country clamor for a UFO! remix,
which guarantees a dance floor hit. His dubplates have become collectors
items as he draws his own artwork, by hand, on every cover. His
creativity and individualized flare carries over into his artwork
which is also sought after by designers and publications. UFO! is
highly respected not just in the Drum and Bass community but by
DJs and producers in other genres worldwide.
UFO!, used his
years of experience DJing and his love of Sci Fi to create, "Enemy
Infiltration", which blazed across the U.S. and abroad and
quickly became a Drum and Bass anthem. The string arrangement on
"Enemy Infiltration" was so stunning, that producers from
the revered Trouble on Vinyl label from the U.K. were compelled
to use a sample for one of their own releases called "Mission
Control". For inspiration, he often collaborates with the Phunckateck
collective and other producers around the globe. Producing at a
rapid fire pace, UFO! continues to work his own blend of magic on
the turntables, and in the studio.
With his self-described
"Bladerunner Funk" style, UFO! just completed four new
tracks entitled "Esfirro", "Future Primitive",
"Smog Machine" and "Teleportation" the latter
two in collaboration with Hive from the label Vortex.. Although
he is constantly touring, he heads straight back into his, Divination
5 Studio, to start producing his next aural assault.
UFO! shreds
the sound systems every week and ignites dance floors all across
the U.S.
