Making
waves in the West Coast's Underground music culture
is internationally acclaimed'Mars' (A.K.A. Michael Adam
RobbinS) of Frequency 8. Mars has helped create roots
for a new sound, Cybertrance, first in Germany, secondly
in San Francisco, and the world.
Beginning
with an ideal of furthering consciousness through trance
music, Mars, with friend and partner Mystre (A.K.A.
Eric Newman), created Frequency 8 (F-8) or Fate. Initially
the movement began as a production company, which created
and promoted events focused entirely on this then new
sound 'Cybertrance'. The next step was to establish
a home base and outlet for Trance music to reach the
public, especially in San Francisco, where house music
dominated the scene. F-8 fostered Cybertrance in a tightly
knit rave community. Growing stronger, popularity and
a steadily growing following lifted it up into the massive
scene where it became and currently is the most prominent
sound in the Bay Area. Mars opened Frequency 8 the record
store and it became the first electronica shop dedicated
to the Cybertrance movement in America. Since the initial
opening in San Francisco, F-8 has spread to Seattle,
and Los Angeles.
Mars established Frequency 8 Records, LLC in 1998, continuing
his vision of creating mental imagery through sound
- which is Cybertrance. With its first release in 1999,
Frequency 8 Records quickly established itself as a
globally recognized label. Distributed world wide by
Intergroove U.K., the label showcases Mars collaborating
with international recording artists such as Commander
Tom, Oliver Lieb, Nostrum, Captain Tinrib, Nuclear Hyde
and Steve Baltes. "Save the Rave," Frequency
8's first release, has sold thousands of copies and
was voted "Number One Song of 1999" on 'Subsonic',
an electronic music radio show aired by Northern California's
largest alternative radio station, LIVE 105. Mars' first
solo release 'Peaceful Warrior', was the second most
requested song of 2000, holding the number one spot
for 14 weeks in a row. Mars is also the first US artist
to appear on Noom Records, one of Germany's most respected
international trance labels. Combining forces with Commander
Tom, Noom's label A & R and one of Europe's top
producers, 'Eye Bee M' b/w 'Trip to Mars', was released
as a collector's edition, celebrating Noom's 30th release.
The pair also produced the soundtrack for 'Fighter's
Mega Mix', a Sega Video game, bringing them worldwide
attention.
Mars
continues to be one of the West Coast's most sought
after Trance artists. He frequently appears at massive
events such as Insomniac's 'Electric Daisy Carnival',
where he followed a performance by world-renown producer,
BT. Performing at Coolworld's event 'Cyberfest 2000',
he played along side artists such as Carl Cox and over
30,000 people were in attendance. Recently, he performed
at the largest event in US rave history, 'Together as
One', where he performed along with artists such as
Paul Oakenfold, for a crowd of over 45,000 people at
the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, New Year's Eve 2001.
Mars' accomplishments are celebrated not only by his
fans but by the media as well. In 1999, URB Magazine
recognized Mars as one of 'The Next 100?', an annual
article that features up and coming talent in electronica.
Interviews with Mars have been broadcast on NPR, MTV
and New Media News; published in XLR8R, Billboard Magazine,
Millennium, Lotus Magazine, SF Chronicle Newspaper,
and the Bay Area Guardian; and featured online on Time
Magazine Digital, Hotwired, and Billboard Online. Major
radio station such as San Francisco's LIVE 105 and WILD
107 have conducted interviews with Mars, where their
electronica shows consistently see Frequency 8 Record
releases at the top of their charts; continuing his
vision of consciousness through music.
